Performance management consultants are becoming more popular in today’s dental practices. Many offices need to find more efficient and economical ways to run their practice. Some may need to make personnel changes that can be easier coming from an outside recommendation. Sometimes doctors can get attached to staff members and feel guilty if they need to make changes. They can take that pressure off of themselves and put it on the consultant.

Some facilities might need just a simple change in how to get their schedules full to doing a complete overhaul of the practice. They can come in and teach the office manager how to run audit reports to where changes can be made. They can recommend behavior changes on employees you are not ready to let go of. If a full change is needed for the practice, they can sit down with you and your staff members in a meeting to go over non confidential ideas.

With out an outside consultant, you can get input on who are your most efficient employees and finding those who are costing your practice money and time. The employee might be well liked, but it does come down to the practice being profitable. The consultant might recommend some behavior changes for the employee versus letting them go right away. You might also need to get new staff members. The outside consultant can recommend companies to bring in working interviews and have you work with someone prior to hiring them on to see how it works out.

There are many companies out there now in this field. You might want to choose someone who has actually worked in the dental field and has that personal knowledge versus someone that just has a degree in practice management. It is easier to respect and take the word of someone who knows what is actually involved in the practice.

Consultants will generally make a first office visit and meet alone with the owner/doctor. Some will charge an initial fee to go over a few basic numbers and information. Some will offer a free first visit. You can do a search to find this information out. They will also spell out what the intended scope of the work they will do. You may only want accounting help, or insurance help.

You can always go with the option of a one time visit and recommendation to your practice to actually signing a contract for monthly services. Some practices have consultants that have been with them for several years. They use them to get information for overall improvements.

The fees can be very expensive so many doctors will make the determination on whether this is a service that would benefit them full time. Use of a consultant part time is the most chosen option. Grabbing benefits on the short term, and taking time to implement longer term changes helps.

Always verify the performance management consultants you will bring in. Check degrees and ask other practices what they did for them and if it improved their facilities. Experience is always important and it usually works out best if someone has actually worked in the field they are making recommendations on.
